MPT4 2026 English Format: Official Breakdown

The MPT4 English paper is a written test that assesses pupils’ skills in Reading and Use of English as well as Writing. Here is the official breakdown of the assessment format:

  • Type of instrument: Written test — Reading and Use of English & Writing
  • Total marks: 50 marks
  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Difficulty level: CEFR A1 / A2
  • Scoring method: Dichotomous and Analytic
  • Content coverage: Standard Kandungan (SK) and Standard Pembelajaran (SP) under the DSKP KSSR curriculum, from Year 1 through Year 4 — not just the Year 4 syllabus alone

As with the other MPT4 subjects, pupils need a solid grasp of English fundamentals going all the way back to Year 1 — not just Year 4 topics. The CEFR A1/A2 difficulty level also means questions are designed against an internationally benchmarked language proficiency scale, not just the local school syllabus alone.

The Six Parts of the MPT4 English Paper

The MPT4 2026 English format is divided into six parts (Part 1 to Part 6), each testing a different skill:

Part 1 — Lexico-grammar (with/without graphics)

Tests basic grammar and vocabulary, sometimes supported by pictures to aid context.

Part 2 — Short Texts

Comprehension of short texts such as posters, notices or simple advertisements.

Part 3 & Part 4 — Linear/Non-linear Text Comprehension

Comprehension of longer texts — stories (linear) and non-narrative texts such as tables or charts (non-linear) — testing the ability to locate information and interpret ideas.

Part 5 — Word Completion (with/without graphics)

Pupils complete words based on picture clues or given letters.

Part 6 — Guided Writing (with graphics)

Pupils write a short paragraph (around 40–50 words) based on a given situation or graphic — this section carries the highest marks in the paper.

Item Types in the MPT4 English Paper

The MPT4 2026 English format combines four item types within a single paper:

  • Objektif Aneka Pilihan (OAP) — standard multiple-choice questions
  • Objektif Pelbagai Bentuk (OPB) — e.g. word completion
  • Subjektif Respons Terhad (SRTh) — short or limited-response answers
  • Subjektif Respons Terbuka (SRTb) — longer, open-ended answers such as guided writing

Skills Assessed

Beyond knowledge of the language system, the paper assesses pupils across two main skill areas:

  • Reading skills: understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating
  • Writing skills: applying, analysing, evaluating, creating

Moral and civic values are also assessed indirectly through pupils’ written responses.

Sample MPT4 English Questions (Original, For Practice)

The sample questions below were created by PME Bookshop based on the official MPT4 format, for practice and illustration only — they are not actual exam questions.

Part 1 Example (Lexico-grammar)

Question: Choose the correct answer.
My sister ___________ to school by bus every morning.

  • A. go
  • B. goes
  • C. going

Part 3/4 Example (Text Comprehension)

Passage: Sarah likes to help her mother at the night market every Saturday. She sells fruit juice at a small stall. Her favourite juice to sell is watermelon juice because many customers like it. After the market closes, Sarah counts the money with her mother before they go home.

Question: What does Sarah sell at the night market?

  • A. fruit
  • B. fruit juice
  • C. money

Part 6 Example (Guided Writing)

Question: Your school is having a Reading Day next week. Do you want to join the event? Give TWO reasons. Write your answer in 40–50 words in a paragraph.

Pupils who are already familiar with the real format walk into the exam far more confident — which is exactly why practice papers that follow the official MPT4 format are so valuable for preparation.

MPT4 English Preparation Tips

Understanding the MPT4 2026 English format is the first step — here are some tips to help your child prepare effectively:

  • Revise basic grammar (tenses, verbs, adjectives) from Year 1 through Year 4
  • Build everyday vocabulary through simple reading — posters, notices, labels and short stories
  • Practise writing short paragraphs (40–50 words) within a set time limit
  • Expose pupils to both linear (story) and non-linear (table, chart, advertisement) texts

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long is the MPT4 English paper?

Under the MPT4 2026 English format, the paper duration is 1 hour 15 minutes, with additional time allocated for pupils with special needs, subject to the school’s arrangements.

Does the MPT4 English paper include a long essay like the Bahasa Melayu paper?

No. The writing section (Part 6) is a short guided-writing paragraph (40–50 words), not a full essay.

What does CEFR A1/A2 difficulty level mean?

CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) A1 and A2 refer to basic to elementary language proficiency levels — in line with what Year 4 pupils are expected to master under Malaysia’s CEFR-aligned KSSR curriculum.
